Persona drift is when an AI-generated persona's answers gradually stop reflecting the traits it was originally defined with — a skeptical persona starts sounding agreeable, or a budget-conscious one stops mentioning cost — typically over the course of a longer conversation with multiple follow-up questions.
Why it matters
A persona that drifts undermines the reason for defining distinct personas in the first place. If a skeptical persona quietly stops being skeptical three questions into a follow-up conversation, its later answers are no longer telling you what a skeptical customer would actually think.
How it shows up in follow-up questions
Drift risk is highest exactly where multi-turn features are most useful — asking a panel follow-up questions after an initial read, the way thepanelist's AskThisPanel does. Keeping follow-ups grounded in the same persona definitions used to generate the panel, rather than letting the conversation open-endedly reshape them, is the main defense against it.
