Mode collapse happens when a set of AI-generated personas, meant to represent a range of viewpoints within an audience, instead converge on nearly identical answers — the language model defaulting to its single most likely response regardless of the persona prompt in front of it.
Why it matters
A panel that's collapsed defeats the purpose of having multiple personas at all — five personas giving the same answer tell you no more than one would, while looking like broader validation than they actually provide. Left undetected, mode collapse can make a narrow, unrepresentative answer look like consensus.
How it's detected
